Before You Apologize
A guided relationship repair tool for after conflict or big fight
You have had a conflict with your partner. You may be hurt, angry, shut down, eager to make everything okay, or mentally preparing Exhibit A through Exhibit Q for the prosecution.
Before you apologize, explain yourself, or return to the argument, this free guided practice can help you slow things down and understand what just happened inside you and between you.
Before You Apologize is designed for use soon after a conflict with a romantic partner, ideally on the same day or while some of the emotional residue is still alive. You can also return to it several days later, and some people may find it helpful for conflicts in other close relationships.

What this relationship repair tool helps you do
Conflict can shrink our thinking. When we feel threatened, misunderstood, blamed, rejected, or disconnected, the mind naturally becomes more interested in protecting us than in understanding the whole picture.
That protection might look like arguing harder, explaining, correcting, appeasing, apologizing too quickly, shutting down, withdrawing, or becoming very certain that the other person is the entire problem.
This practice helps you:
Notice what you are feeling without trying to fix or analyze it
Separate what happened from the meaning your activated mind gave it
Recognize how you protected yourself during the conflict
Understand the interactional cycle between you and your partner
Become more curious about your partner’s experience
Identify what is genuinely yours to own
Consider what repair might require beyond saying “I’m sorry”
